Event Recap – Round 2 – Chuckwalla – Honda Time Attack Challenge

On March 20th, Honda Time Attack Challenge, “HTAC” headed east to Desert Center, California for Round 2 at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. After a fully sold-out 32 drivers at round 1, we managed to best that with 35 drivers coming out to round 2 to compete for bragging rights and awesome trophies. Run groups were full but the final times proved there was speed to be found everywhere. With only 1 event in the books and every position contested , drivers were geared up and anxious to get back out on track to defend existing positions or attack for the top spot in class.

Due to scheduling issues beyond our control, run groups were split into morning and afternoon sessions divided by open passing and point-by passing groups. Because of the massive split in time, HTAC decided to forego the “Do or die” rule for this event only. Only drivers’ best times from Session 2 and 3 counted for trophies. It was indicated in the morning drivers meeting that the afternoon awards ceremony trophies would be contingent upon some drivers still running in their 3rd session.

With ambient temps hovering in the 80s and a dusty track, once again we had thick, close battles in all classes with some positions being decided by tenths and hundredths of a second. Some stand out stats:

The top 6 positions in street modified are split by less than 2s.
The FTD went to a street mod driver in a borrowed car (Go Chris Elders!)
Jeff Ting showed up with the current record of most classing points ever (19.75). To everyone else in unlimited, consider the gauntlet thrown!
After an astonishing battle Street drivers Levi Wenzel and Son Vo are dead even in points tied for first.

Chuckwalla leaves us with memories of a great event with season rivalries forming in every class. All drivers received the HTAC event badge sticker which can only be had on the event it is for.
